HTC One M9 gets RAW photo support with HTC Camera update, HTC Gallery updated too

HTC has released updates to two photography-focused Android apps on Google Play, and at least one of ‘em is sure to make One M9 owners happy.

A new HTC Camera update is now rolling out with support for RAW photos on the HTC One M9. These photos have minimal processing, but because they’re not compressed, they’re going to be pretty large in size. If you plan on shooting RAW, you’re probably going to want a large microSD card so that you don’t eat up all of your One M9’s internal storage in a hurry.

Here’s the full changelog for the HTC Camera update:

  • Raw Camera mode, only available on the HTC One M9
  • Crop-Me-In mode, only available on the HTC One (M8 EYE) running Android 5.0 Lollipop and the HTC Desire EYE
  • Adjustable divider in Split Capture mode
  • Add and remove camera modes

There’s also an update to HTC Gallery that’s going out with additions like “stylish special effects” and the ability to pinch to change views in your Timeline. It’s worth noting that Google Play reviewers are saying that the update removes a lot of features that the app had pre-update, though, so you may want to think twice before installing this new version.

The full HTC Gallery update changelog looks like this:

  • Powerful adjustment tools in the new Photo Editor
  • Stylish special effects: Shapes, Photo Shapes, Prismatic and Double Exposure
  • Eye-catching animated effects: Elements
  • Pinch to change views in the Timeline
  • Image Match now searches photos for similar faces in One Gallery

As smartphone cameras increasingly become the only camera that people use, there’s more and more focus on the quality and feature set. HTC’s been putting in a lot of work on its One cameras lately, and while most mainstream consumers likely won’t care much about the addition of RAW support for the One M9, the feature will appeal to more serious photographers.
