Android 4.4 KitKat grows, other versions shrink in latest Google distribution stats

We’re not even 24 hours into December, but Google has already posted its fresh Android platform distribution numbers for the month.

Google’s Android Developers site shows that Android 4.4 KitKat is now running on 33.9 percent of devices, which is up nearly 4 percent from last month. Meanwhile, Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean fell to 48.7 percent market share and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich dropped to 7.8 percent.

Looking at pre-Android 4.x versions, Android 2.3 Gingerbread fell from 9.8 percent market share in November to 9.1 percent in December. Android 2.2 Froyo dropped from 0.6 percent to 0.5 percent.

So there you have it. We’re not seeing many surprises in this month’s numbers, as many folks likely upgraded from older Android hardware to newer, KitKat-powered devices. There’s no Android 5.0 Lollipop in there quite yet, but with the Nexus 9 and Nexus 6 shipping to consumers in November, we could see Lollipop appear in this chart next month.
