Sony Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet getting Android 4.4.4 with lots of new features

Sony is now pushing Android 4.4.4 updates to the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet, but unlike the regular Android 4.4.4 update that includes some simple bug fixes, Sony is packing its 4.4.4 update with some big new features.

Sony explains that its Android 4.4.4 update — which it calls its newest “Sony User Experience upgrade” — includes PS4 Remote Play like on the Xperia Z3, Hi-Res Audio support, Xperia Camera apps, Ultra Stamina Mode and more. Sony’s full list of changes is as follows:

  • PS4 Remote Play with full DualShock 4 controller compatibility
  • Hi-Res Audio support for PCM and DSD files, Sony DSEE HX tech in Walkman app that’ll improve the sound of MP3, AAC and Music Unlimited tracks
  • Xperia Camera apps like Sound Photo, AR Fun, Multi Camera and Face In
  • Newest version of Battery Stamina Mode as well as Ultra Stamina Mode, the latter of which will make a fully-charged Xperia Z2 last more than a week in standby
  • Quick Settings includes Smart Screen Rotation, Record Screen for recording a video of your display
  • Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet will unlock when near SmartBand, SmartBand Talk or SmartWatch 3 thanks to Bluetooth Unlock feature

This sounds like a pretty spiffy update, especially compared to the standard Android 4.4.4 update, and it could help Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet owners forget about Sony’s new Xperia products for a bit.

As usual, the rollout of this update will vary by market and carrier.
