Microsoft today reported its results for the first quarter of its fiscal 2015, and in the process it also revealed its Lumia sales figures for the quarter.
During the quarter that ended on September 30, Microsoft says that it sold a total of 9.3 million Lumia smartphones, a figure that’s up from 5.8 million in the previous quarter. The folks in Redmond attribute this growth by sales in Europe and the lower-priced device market.
We’ve seen Microsoft focus quite a bit on affordable Windows Phone hardware in 2014, launching devices like the Lumia 530, Lumia 630, Lumia 730 and Lumia 830. As a result, it’s not too surprising to hear that sales got a boost thanks to lower-cost hardware, especially in Europe where affordable unlocked smartphones are more prevalent than in the US.
Microsoft also touched a bit on its Surface business today. While it didn’t reveal sales numbers for its tablet hardware, it did say that Surface brought in revenue of $908 million. Microsoft attributed that to “strong interest” in the Surface Pro 3 from groups like students, professionals and enterprises.
