Google is just full of major announcements recently. After taking the wraps off of the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus Player and Android 5.0 Lollipop last week, the Mountain View team today revealed Inbox.
Inbox is Google’s new email app that’s focused on helping you organize your email and quickly find what’s important. The first feature of Inbox, called Bundles, will group together similar emails so that you can quickly view them and be done with them. For example, Bundles will group your purchase receipts together. Google says that Inbox will learn the way that you work through emails to determine how to group them together.
Next up is Highlights. As its name suggests, Highlights will highlight important information in your emails. For example, Highlights will provide you with flight info, photos and documents as well as details that are pulled from the web about your email, like the status of a package that’s on its way to you.
Finally, Inbox features Reminders, Assists and Snooze. Those are all pretty self-explanatory: Reminders will remind you of things that you need to get done, Assists will give you info needed to get those things done — like the phone number for a hardware store that you need to call — and Snooze will let you hide emails and have them reappear at a specified time so that you can focus on whatever you’re doing at the time, ala Mailbox.
Inbox is invitation-only, and Google says that it’s sending out the first invitations today. Each user that’s invited will be able to invite their friends to Inbox as well. If you don’t get an invitation or have a friend that gets one, you can email inbox@google.com to request an invitation when more become available.
