Google Play Services update brings more Material Design goodness, new Google Settings icon

Just one day after the Google Play Store got a nice Material Design makeover, another Google app is getting a similar refresh.

Google Play Services version 6.1.71 is a new update that’s now making its way out to users. Perhaps the most notable change is an updated icon, which is flat and Android L like in its design. The app also includes updated checkboxes that are in line with Android L design.

While this update isn’t quite as major or user-facing as the Google Play Store’s, it is notable because it shows Google taking another step to prepare its core Android apps for the arrival of Android L. Thankfully the wait for L may nearly be over, as it’s been suggested that Android L may make its full debut later this month alongside some new Nexus hardware.

While we wait for the official Android L update to begin, you can get a taste of the update by grabbing the new Google Play Services APK at the link below.
