The Blackphone launched earlier this year with a heavy focus on security, offering users encrypted voice and video calls as well as text messages, all with its “Silent” series of apps. We haven’t heard exactly how well the phone has sold to date, but apparently the privacy features of the handset are popular enough for its creators to manufacture another device.
One of the creators of the Blackphone has confirmed to the BBC that his company is working on a tablet. Jon Callas, one of the founders of Blackphone-maker Silent Circle, didn’t offer any details on the tablet, but he did say that it’ll be available “soon.” Callas also suggested that another Blackphone could be in the works, saying that the phone is “our first device not our last device.”
There have been a number of high-profile data breaches as of late, and as a result there’s been an increased focus on security over the past year or so. The Blackphone may have benefitted as a result, and it looks like Silent Circle plans to continue to ride the wave that it’s on. What will be interesting is seeing how Silent Circle plans to spec out its new devices and what other new security features, if any, it can offer to convince consumers to adopt its encrypted products.
Have any of you used a Blackphone?
