Last year Google launched the Chromecast, a little dongle that lets you beam content from your phone or tablet to your TV. Unfortunately, while some Android and iOS apps support Chromecast, we haven’t seen much Windows love for the stick. Now Microsoft is here to solve that problem.
The Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter plugs in to an HDTV, monitor or projector and lets you send content from a Miracast-enabled device to your big screen. Because it’s based on Miracast, the Wireless Display Adapter works with PCs, Windows 8.1 tablets, Windows Phone hardware and more.
Depending on the device that you’re beaming from, you’ll be able to either mirror your tablet, computer or phone’s screen or extend it. Microsoft notes that you can beam audio as well as video content with its dongle.
The Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter is now available for preorder in the US and Canada for $59.99. It’ll launch in October in Best Buy stores and Microsoft’s own retail outlets. While it’s a tad pricier than the Chromecast, it looks like a worthwhile option for Windows folks that want an easy and portable way to beam content from their mobile device to a bigger screen.
