After selling a record number of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 preorders earlier in September, Apple today announced that its record-setting ways have continued into the new devices’ launch weekend.
More than 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units were sold over their first weekend of availability, Apple says. The two iOS smartphones officially went on sale on September 19 in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. Apple didn’t get into specifics on how many of each iPhone model it sold.
Apple CEO Tim Cook issued a statement on the record iPhone 6 weekend, saying that “Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”
To compare, Apple sold 9 million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c units over their debut weekend in 2013, while the iPhone 5 sold 5 million units over its launch weekend. Obviously this is a pretty big opening weekend for Apple’s new hardware, and it shows that many iOS fans are just as excited about larger displays as the rest of the smartphone-owning market is.
