Tablets can be too big, too

It took me a long time to get into tablets. It wasn’t from a lack of trying, though. Right from when the first iPad launched, I’ve had so many different tablets, from different manufacturers, offering different operating systems, that I could never hope to keep track. I’ve had a few that I’ve liked over the years, too, even one that I probably shouldn’t have liked so much (if at all — but I love you, webOS!).

But it wasn’t up until about the middle of last year that I finally found a reason to keep one. And it wasn’t even really for myself.

Ultimately, my time with tablets has always been trying to find the best reason to own one. Or, any reason at all. I always love using them for a little while after I pick one up, maybe a week or two, but then it ultimately becomes a device that I just set on a table or inside of a drawer and never use again. It wasn’t until my daughters started asking me if they could do their number or letter games that it stuck around.

There is one thing that I learned over the years, though. One absolute truth that I’m pretty sure will never, ever change. Big tablets don’t make any sense to me. These are supposed to be devices that are more mobile than our laptops, even the ones that are meant to replace our laptops, and the bigger you get the more you lose that basic feature.

Actually, it’s more than that. In the case of the Surface Pro 3, for instance, that’s a tablet that’s remarkably thin and lightweight. It’s lighter than it should be, really. But, while using it docked to the keyboard is perfectly fine, I jus couldn’t use it for long when I was using it just as a tablet.

And now the rumors about a 12.9-inch iPad are back, and I can’t help but just laugh at that. I’ll usually consider any product that gets leaked or rumored, and judge it based on the information provided to see if it’s something I can include in my daily routine. But the “iPad Pro,” with its gigantic display, is just something that I can’t get behind at all.

I’m sure that if Apple is indeed creating a tablet of that size, and I guess nothing is impossible, that they’ll be able to match the size with features that make it worthwhile. Like the split-screen feature that’s still rumored to be coming in iOS 8, for instance. But if you’re dealing with a tablet of that size, then you should probably just get a MacBook (Pro or Air) with a touchscreen, right?

But what do you think about the rumors of a 12.9-inch iPad? Is that something you could see yourself buying? Let me know!
