Samsung Gear VR virtual reality headset reportedly shown in leaked image

Samsung has either launched or is rumored to be prepping a number of different types of mobile hardware, including phablets, tablets, smartwatches and eyewear. Now some new details have surfaced on another new type of product that ol’ Sammy is cooking up in its kitchen.

A report from SamMobile claims to have details on a Samsung-made virtual reality headset known as the “Samsung Gear VR.” It’s said that the Gear VR features a modular design that allows users to insert any Galaxy device into the headset using a USB 3.0 connection. Once connected, the Gear VR will utilize the smartphone’s accelerometer, gyroscope and processor to track head motion.

As for the Gear VR hardware itself, the unit will reportedly feature a small hole that will allow the phone’s camera to capture the outside world and feed that view into the headset. A touchpad will be used to enable users to navigate the Gear VR’s user interface.

Finally, it’s said that Samsung is working on the Gear VR hardware itself, but that it’s collaborating with Oculus VR — makers of the Oculus Rift VR headset — on the software. Some of the initial Gear VR apps will include Theatre, 360 Player and Gallery.

According to today’s report, Samsung is planning to unveil the Gear VR at IFA in early September alongside the Galaxy Note 4.

While still a rumor for now, the possibility that Samsung is prepping a VR headset seems like it could be real. We’ve seen in the past that Samsung likes to get itself into as many product categories as possible, and with the likes of the Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus, it appears that VR headsets are becoming an “it” product.

What do you think of this Samsung Gear VR rumor? Will you be interested in the device if it ends up becoming reality?
