Ever since the introduction of the original iPhone in 2007, Apple has only offered one screen size of its handset per generation. The first several models were 3.5 inches, and with the iPhone 5 and 5s Apple moved up to 4 inches. The rumor mill suggests that that may finally change this year, though, with the Cupertino firm possibly planning to offer a 4.7-inch iPhone and a larger 5.5-inch model. This weekend some images of the latter model’s display have purportedly leaked.
Images shared by 9to5Mac claim to show the the iPhone 6’s 5.5-inch display. The shots come from Sonny Dickson, who has been responsible for Apple leaks in the past. While there aren’t any markings or any other indicators that show that this screens will indeed be used in the next iPhone, they do measure 14cm diagonally, which works out to be 5.51181 inches. A recent rumor claimed that Apple is testing bigger iPhones with a resolution of 1704x960.
The mobile market has trended toward devices with larger and larger displays in recent years, but Apple has gone against that trend by offering “small” 3.5-inch and 4-inch iPhone models. This year it sounds like the that may change, with Apple finally figuring out how to offer a big-screened phone in a way that it likes.
Selling bigger iPhones could help to keep existing iOS users from defecting to another platform that does offer larger phones and also attract other users that are interested in the iOS ecosystem but prefer big phones. It’ll definitely be interesting to see how Apple talks about these larger iPhones and if the company decides to keep a 4-inch iPhone around for those consumers that still like smaller smartphones.
