Much of the Firefox news that we’ve heard lately has focused on Mozilla’s Firefox OS, including a sneak peek of Firefox OS 2.0, the launch of the “Flame” developer device and the impending $25 smartphone. Today we’re switching things up a bit, though, as Mozilla has made a Firefox-related announcement concerning Android.
Mozilla recently revealed that, with the arrival of Firefox for Android 29, Firefox OS apps can now run on Android devices. That’s because the apps are built using HTML5. These apps look just like native apps, meaning that they can be installed, updated and uninstalled just like a native app, and they’ll also appear in a user’s App Drawer and Recent Apps list. Perhaps the best part of this news, though, is that developers can get their Firefox OS apps prepped for use on Android without changing a single line of code.
The Android platform certainly isn’t hurting for apps, but this news of Firefox OS app compatibility is still a welcome sight. Not only does it give more app options for Android users, but it also allows Firefox OS devs to reach a wider audience without requiring them to put in any extra work.
