Remember Project Tango? The Google project included its effort to build an Android smartphone with an advanced visual processor known as Myriad 1. This technology used sensors to take in details of the device’s surroundings, including depth and objects, to create a three-dimensional map of the world around it.
Google hasn’t said much about Project Tango since then, but the rumor mill hasn’t been quite as silent. Sources speaking to the Wall Street Journal say that Google is prepping a Project Tango tablet that features a 7-inch display, two rear cameras, infrared depth sensors and special software that can capture 3D images of objects around it.
This Project Tango tablet could debut ahead of Google I/O 2014, which is slated to take place on June 25 and June 26. Google will reportedly produce around 4000 prototype units of the device.
When it first introduced Project Tango, Google said that it would be setting aside some of its smartphones to give to developers so that they can come up with unique uses for the technology. I’m sure that we’ll see a similar situation play out with this tablet, especially if Google does end up introducing it ahead of I/O.
