T-Mobile made waves earlier this week when it announced that it would be doing away with employer rate plan discounts. Despite the fact that T-Mo said that it would give eligible customers a $25 reward card with the purchase of a new device as a replacement for the discount, many members of the Magenta Army were upset at the news that they'd soon lose their cheaper monthly rate. There's some good news today for those folks that currently get a discount through their employer, though, as T-Mobile has changed its mind about part of its policy change.
T-Mobile CMO Mike Sievert says that his carrier will allow existing customers with corporate discounts to keep their cheaper rates. T-Mo originally said that those subscribers would lose their discounts on April 25. However, it appears that the consumer uproar over the proposed change has caused T-Mobile to backtrack a bit, as only new T-Mo customers will receive a $25 reward card with the purchase of a device instead of a monthly rate plan discount.
Typically when a carrier decides to make a policy change involving its rate plans, the existing customers that are already signed up for that plan are allowed to be "grandfathered" in and keep that plan. That's why it was kind of strange to see T-Mobile announce that its subscribers that were already signed up for an employer discount would lose their savings. It's good to see that T-Mo has changed its mind and will allow current customers to keep their corporate discount, and I'm sure that those folks that are saving some cash on their monthly T-Mo bill through an employer discount would agree.
