When it introduced its Nokia X family of devices at MWC earlier this week, Nokia made sure to point out that while the phones were based on Android, they would not run any Google apps or services. That didn't stop the Android hacking community from trying to load Google's software onto the Nokia X, though, and now it appears that the effort was a success.
xda-developers member Kashamalaga managed to get hold of a Nokia X and, after gaining root access, he loaded the Google Play Store, Google Now Launcher and even some Google apps onto the device. A brief video of the Google-fied Nokia X shows that it's just like any other Android phone, complete with widgets and Google Now. Kashamalaga has also posted a step-by-step guide explaining how he made his Nokia X go Google.
Interestingly, Nokia's official @NokiaDeveloper Twitter account responded to Kashamalaga's effort by saying what he has done is "awesome" and that it's "very excited to see progress is being made." That's not exactly the response one would expect considering that Nokia worked to replace Google's apps and services with Microsoft's on the Nokia X, but it's great to see that the company is cool with the Android community tinkering with its device. Here's to hoping that that remains the case. If it does, it'll be interesting to see what the community can do with Nokia's X hardware, especially considering it took less than a week to get Google's apps onto the X.
