Before we get started, I want you to take a moment and look at your current phone. If you have two (or more), I want you to look at the one you use the most. The device you'd say is your "daily driver." The favorite. And if you happen to be reading this from that particular phone, take a moment or two to really look at it. At the same time, I want you to think about the reasons you picked that particular phone over any of the others that were available for you to choose. What was the defining feature, or design aspect, that made you choose this particular phone as your main means of communication?

Done? Excellent. Now that we've done that, it's time to look to what's ahead. Sure, we may not know all the facts about the devices that are coming down the pipe for 2014, but we have a pretty firm grasp on the rough details so far. We know that 2014 is going to be a big year for a lot of the mobile manufacturers out there, and that means it's going to be a big year for the consumer, too. For us. We're going to see plenty of upgraded specs and stats, and we're going to see plenty of changes to software features.
Whether it's the Galaxy S5, the M8 from HTC, or the successors for the Galaxy Note 3 and iPhone 5s, this year's going to see plenty of great devices land on store shelves. And, ultimately, the pockets of millions of smartphone owners all over the world.
It also means that a lot of people out there are going to have to start considering a change. For fans of the mobile market, a new year means a new phone, or phones, and budgeting the funds to make sure we can get our hands on the new and shiny. Managing the money to get the new device is definitely one of the most important aspects, but the other side of that coin is actually finding the need to upgrade. To look at your current phone (which we've already done), and find reasons to go to a new phone.
I'm not going to ask you if you're going to upgrade to a specific handset this year, at least not yet. There's not enough information out there to really make a solid, "I'm gonna get this phone!" statement yet, as far as I'm concerned.
(This does not count for the fans of a certain platform/manufacturer/whatever else, obviously. I'm sure you've all made up your minds by now.)
Instead, I want to know what you thought about when you looked at your current phone, the reasons why you bought it when you bought it, and what it is you're looking to upgrading the most this year. Or need to upgrade. If you've got an older phone, there's a chance you're not running a display with a 720p or 1080p HD quality panel, so you may be looking to pick up a phone with a better screen.
Or maybe the camera on your phone just isn't good enough anymore, and you know that they've been improved quite a bit ever since you picked up your handset. Maybe you're just looking to get more memory, or a faster processor. If you plan on getting a new phone this year, there must be something you're looking to make better. And I want to know what that is.
So, tell me what it is you're looking to upgrade the most this year. What is it that you need to change in the year 2014 about your phone, and the only way to do that is to get something new. And hey, if you really want to, tell me which device you're looking forward to the most. Can't hurt, right?
