HTC offering unlocked One with $0 down financing program

Shortly after taking the wraps off of its flagship One smartphone earlier this year, HTC announced that it would also sell an unlocked version of the device that would come commitment-free, and receive updates directly from HTC. Those features have made the unlocked HTC One an attractive option to folks that travel frequently or want to avoid getting involved with a carrier. Because the device isn't subsidized by an operator, though, buyers must pony up a cool $599 to own one. That amount of cash can be tough to come up with all at once, but now HTC is making it easier to snag an unlocked One with a new $0 down financing offer.

According to HTC's website, the promotion allows qualified consumers to buy a 32GB unlocked HTC One (compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile in the U.S.) for $0 down and then make 24 monthly payments of $25 each without incurring any interest. Just as with Motorola's recent $0 down offer, though, buyers that make a late payment or send in a payment that must be returned could face an interest rate of up to 29.99 percent. The promotion will run through Dec. 29.

Even though it was announced way back in February, the HTC One is still regarded as one of the better Android handsets currently available. While it is still available from all four major U.S. carriers, this unlocked model could be more attractive to shoppers because it can be swapped between operators at will. It also receives prompt updates, as evidenced by the fact that it's already been updated to Android 4.4 while the carrier-branded models have not. However, with a 29.99 percent interest penalty, consumers should do some math and make sure that they'll be able to make all of the on-time payments before applying.
