Google: Nexus 5 Android 4.4.1 update starts going out today

Remember that report from earlier today that claimed that Android 4.4.1 would be rolling out to the Nexus 5 in the coming days? Well, the news that an update to Android 4.4.1 is imminent was right, but it turns out that the update is actually starting its push today.

The official Nexus account on Google+ just announced that an update to Android 4.4.1 will begin hitting Nexus 5 units today, Dec. 5, complete with a number of camera-related improvements. According to +Nexus, the update brings with it:

  • Faster focusing, especially in low light situations
  • Faster white balancing
  • Support for pinch-to-zoom with the viewfinder while in HDR+ mode
  • Reduced shutter lag

Sounds like speeding up the Nexus 5 camera is indeed a major focus of this update. We'll have to wait until Android 4.4.1 actually hits our Nexus 5 units before making any judgments about these camera improvements, but it's good to see Google not only responding to the criticism of the N5's shooter, but doing so in a timely manner. It's worth noting that these updates typically go out in phases, so those of you rocking a Nexus 5 should keep an eye on your notification tray in the coming days for the alert that your update has arrived. You can also always head into Settings > About phone > System updates > Check now to perform a manual check if you get truly impatient.
