Best Buy and Sprint promo offers one year of free service to students

Are you a student in the hunt for a new smartphone? If so, you may want to try and put those textbooks down for a few minutes to check out a new offer from Best Buy and Sprint.

The two companies announced today that they're giving students 12 months of unlimited talk and text as well as 1GB of data each month for no charge. The promo, which runs through Jan. 4, requires that a student purchase an eligible device at a special Student Activated Price and activate a new line of service on an Unlimited, My Way plan. The list of eligible devices includes the Galaxy S 4 for $649.99, iPhone 5s for $699.99 and HTC One for $599.99. The full list can be found right here.

After buying a phone and activating it on an Unlimited, My Way plan, students will be receive unlimited talk and text along with 1GB of data usage each month for a total of 12 months. Customers can add unlimited data to the plan for $10 per month. It's also worth noting that for every new referral line of service that activates an Unlimited, My Way or My All-In plan on the same account at Best Buy, students will receive another 12 months of free service.

Overall this looks like a pretty sweet deal for students. School certainly isn't getting any cheaper, and with more and more coursework and tools going online, it's increasingly important for a student to be connected. Obviously the cost of entry here isn't cheap since students are basically paying full retail price for their phone, but buyers can also get up to $840 worth of free Sprint service, so this deal may be worth looking into for anyone that thinks that they may be able to shell out the full cost of a handset.
