It's hard to believe that it's already the end of October. It seems like just yesterday we were talking about the impending release of Motorola's Moto X, or LG's G2 -- all of which happened back in August. And then we've got things like the Galaxy Note 3 from Samsung, or Apple's iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. They all came with such a rush, seemingly week after week, and now here we are at the end of October just waiting for the holiday shopping season to kick in so we can see what type of deals pop up for that next device we want to buy.
Oh, and let's not forget about Google's and (probably) LG's Nexus 5 that has still yet to grace us with an official announcement. I know if you're anything like me you've been eating up the recent leaks, all in a build-up to the official release for the new stock Android-based handset. I'm practically chomping at the bit to see what Google has in store for us this year.
Every time I see a "Nexus 5" in an article title, I can't help but get a little (a lot?) excited that Google has officially announced it. Sadly, that hasn't been the case just yet. And I know Google has to be loving the suspense that's building.
Quit torturing us, Google!
Over the last few weeks, it seems that we've been inundated with Nexus 5 rumors and leaks, all pointing to a device that's going to look ridiculously nice, and be powerful to boot. We've seen more pictures than I can count, both of product images and "in real life" photos. We've even reportedly seen the box! But, we're still missing the most important part of the equation: Google's announcement and final unveil. The leaks and rumors have suggested the phone should have been already available by now more than once, but most recently it's been changed to November 1.
Whatever date Google has penned down to reveal the Nexus 5, in the interim all of us have to wait, and keep looking at the leaks and reading the rumors. And truthfully, that's fine. Why? Because we're just a few days away from the announcement of the device, probably less a week even, so all of these leaks and rumors are probably based on fact, rather than just wild accusations.
If you're reading this, then you probably also read a lot of phone related news, which means you get to see all the rumors and speculation and leaks, too. I like reading that stuff just as much as the next person, but I can honestly say that there are some "reports" that I just flat-out skip and refuse to read because they're outside any kind of comfortable window of time.
For instance, and it seems to happen with this particular lineup of devices more than any other (shocker!), this morning we saw our first report about the next iPhone. Yep. The iPhone 6 will reportedly feature a 5-inch display, and it will also be a 1080x1920 HD panel, too. The same report suggests Apple is working as hard as they can to make the bezel of the device practically non-existent, too.
I know at face value that there isn't much of a difference between leaks and rumors about the iPhone 6 and the Nexus 5. They're both unsubstantiated reports, based on something heard, seen, or believed rather than announced information. However, to me, there's a huge difference: timing. Like I mentioned earlier, the Nexus 5 is just about to be announced, but the iPhone 6? Come on! It's been just over a month since the iPhone 5s was first introduced by Apple, and here we are already talking about the next device in the line? Stop it. It's honestly kind of ridiculous.
Sure, we can probably guess correctly that the next iPhone is going to see a design change in its physical build, based on past experiences, but that doesn't mean you should start talking about what someone said in a factory once. Or what analysts have checked with their chain channel contacts. The truth is, Apple toys around with all sorts of devices at any given moment, so what they're manufacturing on lines doesn't necessarily mean it's going to see the light of day. Ever.
Would I like to see an iPhone with a bigger display? Absolutely. But I'm not going to give iPhone focused leaks and rumors the time of day right now. It's just too far from the actual announcement, and too soon from the last one.
