Following a string of leaks that started out with some simple sketches and ended with "in the wild" photos, the LG G Flex is now officially official. Just as the rumors claimed, the device features a curved OLED display that measures 6 inches in size and features a resolution of 1280x720. Unlike Samsung's Galaxy Round, which has a screen that curves from side to side, the G Flex's display curves from top to bottom. According to LG, this makes the device more ergonomic during phone calls and helps to immerse the user in videos, giving them an IMAX-like viewing experience.
The G Flex's curved screen isn't its only unique feature, as LG also says that the device is sporting a "self-healing" back cover that it compares to one of the powers used by Wolverine of the X-Men. LG explains that the scratch-resistant film allows the user to remove light scratches from the G Flex's backside in a matter of minutes. LG also says that the G Flex's is capable of recording high-quality audio.
Powering the G Flex is a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and a 3500mAh battery, the latter of which is curved just like the phone's display. LG has also included 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, a microSD card slot, NFC, LTE-Advanced and HSPA+ connectivity. The backside of the G Flex houses a 13-megapixel camera as well as a set of volume and power buttons like the ones found on the LG G2, and the front of the G Flex features a 2.1-megapixel shooter.
On the software side of things, LG has opted to include Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean along with its own custom user interface. Just like the G Flex's hardware, the custom software features some special tricks of its own, like the "Swing Lockscreen" that will tilt the lock screen's wallpaper with the curve of the screen and will also produce different effects depending on the position of the user's finger. Also included is a "Dual Window" multitasking feature that will split the G Flex's display into two separate areas as well as the same "Guest Mode" and "KnockON" features that are found on the G2.
LG says that it will officially unleash the G Flex and its curved display upon the public next month, with launches on all three major South Korean carriers planned. Unfortunately for the rest of the globe, the Life's Good crew hasn't made any announcements regarding availability outside of its home country. The good news is that there are several images of the G Flex available in the gallery below to help those of us that don't reside in South Korea get a better (mental) feel for the new device and its curvy frame.
