Twitter for Android Tablets app official, exclusive to Samsung devices for now

The official Twitter for Android app has been around for several years now, but for whatever reason, Twitter has never released a version of the app that's optimized for use on the larger displays of Android-powered tablets. That's finally changing today, as Twitter has officially introduced a tablet-friendly version of its Android app. Interestingly, Twitter for Android Tablets will be exclusive to Samsung-made slates for now, starting with the newly-released Galaxy Note 10.1 - 2014 Edition. Twitter says that the app will be made available to other Android tablets by the end of 2013.

Because it's optimized for large-screen tablet devices, the new Twitter for Android Tablets app features some unique features that the company says it worked with Samsung to create. One of those features is a multi-screen view that allows users to run Twitter and a second app simultaneously, similar to the multi-window feature found in Samsung's TouchWiz UI.

Also included with the Twitter for Android Tablets app is a widget that will display a user's stream and supports both favoriting and retweeting. Finally, the tablet-optimized app features a drawing mode that lets users create and share illustrations or draw directly onto photos from the gallery.

It seems kind of crazy that Twitter is just now getting around to releasing a tablet-optimized app for Android, especially considering how long the service has had an iPad-friendly app available on Apple's App Store. Unfortunately for most Android folks, the app is only officially available for the Galaxy Note 10.1 - 2014 Edition right now, meaning that the wait for an official Twitter tablet app continues for most Android users. Here's to hoping that Twitter doesn't wait until right before the calendar flips over to 2014 to make the app available to other Android tablets.
