BlackBerry Messenger has been in the news quite a bit lately thanks to the upcoming BBM Android and iOS apps and their launch issues. Today a BBM client is making headlines once again, but this time topic involved a platform that we don't talk about much in the wireless world.
During the BlackBerry Jam Asia conference that's currently underway in Hong Kong, BlackBerry demonstrated BBM running in a desktop Windows environment. As you can see in the image snapped by CrackBerry, the user is basically able to mirror his or her BlackBerry smartphone's display onto the Windows desktop, including a list of ongoing conversations and individual chats. The software can mirror a BlackBerry's display over USB or Wi-Fi, and it's also said to feature Windows integration for sharing files. BlackBerry says that it's got a working Mac version of this BBM software as well.
So when can expect to get your desktop BBM action on? Unfortunately, that's still up in the air. BlackBerry said that this is simply a tech demo and that no launch plans have been made quite yet. It's good to see that BlackBerry recognizes a desktop app would be a smart move, though, and while it's kind of disappointing that the current software is just a mirror of a user's smartphone and not a full-on client, it's also better than nothing. Here's to hoping that it's not long before the desktop BBM software goes from tech demo to something that end users can actually install.
