iPad mini 2 rear shell photographed with iPhone 5s-like Space Gray color

Apple's new iPhone 5s features a design that's largely similar to the iPhone 5 that came before it, but one thing that has changed in the jump from the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 5s is color selection. The new iPhone 5s will be sold in new gold and Space Gray color options, the latter of which replaces the black and slate iPhone 5 model. The announcement of these new colors has prompted speculation about whether or not Apple will bring these new paint jobs to its iPad line as well, and if a new leak is to be believed, at least one of the hues will.

Images posted by French site Nowhereelse.fr claim to show the read shell of an iPad mini 2 that's decked out in a Space Gray color. The hue is clearly different from the silver backing of the white iPad mini and does look similar to the Space Gray backing of the iPhone 5s. Outside of the new color, this iPad mini 2 shell doesn't look terribly different from the backside of the original iPad mini, including a similar button and port layout.

The iPad mini 2 is expected to debut at an event next month. While the rumor mill has gone back and forth on whether or not the new slate will include a high-res Retina display, a new Space Gray color option certainly seems like one change that Apple could easily bring to its shrunken tablet. Meanwhile, a new full-size iPad is also rumored to be on the way, complete with a refreshed design that closely mirrors that of the iPad mini. That includes rounded edges and thinner side bezels, which previous leaks have shown will help to make the device quite a bit smaller.
