ASUS says 'new PadFone Infinity' will lift off on Sept. 17

ASUS showed off a number of products at IFA 2013 last week, including a couple of Fonepads, some MeMO Pad tablets and its Transformer Pad TF701T tablet. One device that didn't make the trip to Berlin, though, is the company's tablet-docking PadFone. It's not clear exactly why that's the case, but ASUS today announced that it plans to remedy this recent PadFone deficiency with a dedicated event next week in Taiwan.

Invitations sent out by ASUS reveal that the firm is planning an event on Sept. 17 for "the new PadFone Infinity." There's also a brief video teaser video on ASUS's YouTube channel that shows a PadFone blasting off like a rocketship from its tablet dock along with a description that teases that "the next smartphone and tablet combination is landing" next Tuesday.

The original PadFone Infinity that debuted back in February was a pretty high-end piece of kit with a 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, and a pair of 13-megapixel and 2-megapixel cameras. It's not clear what kind of tweaks ASUS is planning to make for its new PadFone, but a bump up to a Snapdragon 800 seems like one of the most obvious possibilities. Engadget suggests that a microSD slot and white paint job could also be in the cards. Sounds like a nice handful of upgrades to me. Now we just have to wait until Sept. 17 rolls around to see if they actually make the cut. How many times do you think that you can watch ASUS's 8-second teaser until then?
