Motorola: Moto X custom engraving option won't be available at launch

Once the Moto X makes its way to store shelves later this month, consumers will have the ability to use Motorola's Moto Maker tool to customize a Moto X to their liking. That includes the front and back colors, storage space and more, but Motorola revealed today that one of the customizations won't be available at launch.

Speaking to JR Raphael of Computerworld, Motorola has said that its custom engraving option won't be offered to Moto Maker users at launch. The company explains that the quality of the printing on the phone's didn't meet its quality standards during beta testing. As a result, Motorola will be pulling the feature while it figures out how to improve the print quality. Moto hopes to begin offering the engraving option soon.

Considering that the Moto Maker customization tool is one of the Moto X's big features, today's news definitely comes as a disappointment. That's doubly true when you remember that AT&T's Moto X is launching this Friday, meaning that it's possible that the first consumers that use the Moto Maker tool won't have the engraving option available to them.

I suppose the good news here is that at least Motorola caught the problem ahead of the Moto X's consumer launch and was able to avoid any shipping out any flawed units to consumers. Here's to hoping that the firm can get its printing issue sorted out quickly so that consumers can begin tattooing their own Moto Xs with the phrase "I love PhoneDog."
