Looks like Google is prepping a new Android application to add to the extensive list of apps that it already offers on the platform. The new app, called "Chromoting," is expected to be an Android version of the Chrome Remote Desktop app for the Chrome browser, which allows users to access other computers or grants someone else access to your computer over the Internet. The app is being built by Google's Chromium team.
Google employee François Beaufort loaded the app onto a device, giving us a preview of its icon. Beaufort didn't offer up any details on the app itself, saying only that it "doesn't do that much for the moment," but he did link to the Chromium Code Review that lists the app's current capabilities and the features that it's currently missing:
Currently, this has only the following capabilities:
- Authenticate using a Google account on the phone
- Query and display the host list from the Chromoting directory server
- Connect to and communicate with the host service over XMPP/ICE
- Establish peer-to-peer channels for communicating with the host service
Notable missing features are:
- Display the host's desktop
- Handle any kind of input
The Chromoting app is still in the very early stages of its life, as the aforementioned Chromium Code Review for the project was created just two days ago. As such, it's unclear what the final product's feature set will be or when it'll be made available to the public. We do know that it's coming, though, and it'll be interesting to see how Chromoting stacks up against existing remote desktop apps on Android.
