Having debuted over a year ago at Google I/O 2012, the Nexus 7 is starting to get a little long in the tooth. Google I/O 2013 came and went without so much as a peep about the 7-inch tablet's successor, but today a few details about the next version of the Nexus 7 have made their way online.
A new image posted by Android Central shows the inventory of an unnamed retailer, complete with listings for a "NEXUS 2 7"" device. There are entries for 16GB and 32GB models, and the devices are listed with price tags of $229 and $269, respectively. That's a tad more expensive than the current Nexus 7 models, which are priced at $199 for the 16GB unit and $249 for the 32GB model. The entries for this new Nexus tablet also suggest that it'll pack a quad-core processor, which is expected to be a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip and not an NVIDIA Tegra processor like the one that's in the current Nexus 7.
The Nexus 7 seems to be one of the most widely-adopted Android tablets to date, likely thanks to factors like its Club Nexus membership and low price, and so it's no surprise to learn that Google is prepping a successor. Some regulatory and certification documents have suggested that the new Nexus 7 will be made by ASUS and that it'll pack 5-megapixel rear and 1.2-megapixel front cameras as well as a 4,000mAh battery. Should all of the Nexus 7 2's rumored specs hold true, Google could have another popular tablet on its hands, even if it does end up being a little more expensive than the first Nexus 7.
UPDATE: According to an internal OfficeMax document sent to Engadget, the office supplier is expecting to receive stock of a "new Google Nexus 7" as early as July 20. Customers likely won't be able to actually buy one on that date since Google's event isn't until July 24, but at least we may not have to wait long after next week's breakfast to buy the new Nexus tablet.
