We're not exactly strangers to the Nokia Lumia 1020 at this point, but today Elop and Co. are taking our relationship with the new Windows Phone 8 device to the next level by formally introducing us all. The Nokia Lumia 1020 is now official, and just as some promotional videos from earlier this morning revealed, the device is headed to AT&T in the U.S. The AT&T Lumia 1020 will launch on July 26 for $299.99 with a two-year contract, and interested customers will be able to pre-order a unit starting July 16. Launches in China and Western Europe are planned for Q3 2013.
The Lumia 1020 is Nokia's first Windows Phone device with a 41-megapixel camera sensor, following in the footsteps of the Symbian-powered 808 PureView that launched last year. The camera's got all of the trappings that you'd expect from a high-end smartphone camera, including optical image stabilization, LED and Xenon flashes and an f/2.2 lens.
To help users take full advantage of that 41-megapixel shooter, Nokia is also bundling in a new Pro Camera app that will allow Lumia 1020 owners to fine-tune the camera's settings. The app will offer controls for white balance, ISO, focus, exposure levels, and more. Nokia Pro Camera will also allow users to capture both a high-res 38-megapixel photo and a 5-megapixel version of the image at the same time, with the latter being ideal for sharing with friends and on social networks.
Nokia's focus on the Lumia 1020's camera doesn't stop with the device itself, though, as the company is also launching an accessory to help users take photos with the 41-megapixel shooter. The Nokia Camera Grip features a built-in tripod mount, micro-USB connector and a 1,020mAh battery to provide extra juice to the Lumia 1020 itself. The Camera Grip will be available in black, white and yellow for $79.
Turning our attention to the rest of the phone, the Lumia 1020 sports a 4.5-inch 1280x768 AMOLED display on its face as well as a 1.2-megapixel wide-angle camera. Buried inside the Lumia 1020's body is a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 32GB storage, 2GB RAM and NFC support. There's no wireless charging built into the Lumia 1020 like there was with the Lumia 920, but the 1020 will have its own wireless charging cover that snaps onto the back of the phone. The Lumia 1020 will be available in matte black, matte white and matte yellow.
In addition to the Lumia 1020, Nokia had some big app-related news to share during today's event. The Finnish firm has revealed that Vine, Path and Flipboard will all be coming to the Windows Phone Store, which currently boasts 165,000 apps.
Nokia also said that the camera-centric Oggl PRO app from Hipstamatic will be a Lumia 1020 exclusive. Oggl PRO is the advanced version of the Oggl app that will give Lumia 1020 users advanced controls over their shots, including manual exposure and auto-leveling. Once a photo is taken, it can be shared to social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Oggl PRO will be available with a $2.99 quarterly subscription or a $9.99 yearly option.
