Following the launch of Android Open Source Project programs for both the Xperia S and Xperia Z, Sony today extended its AOSP efforts to a new tablet. Sony has announced on its official Developer World blog that it has added the Xperia Tablet Z to its AOSP for Xperia project, which means that it'll be publishing binaries, kernel sources and other information related to the device in order to allow custom ROM developers to tinker with the Tablet Z and adapt it to their needs.
As with the two Xperia smartphones that have been added to the AOSP for Xperia project, the software that Sony is releasing for the Xperia Tablet Z isn't intended to be relied upon for day-to-day use. Instead, it's meant to be used by developers of custom Android ROMs to learn more about AOSP and Sony's tablet and allow them to incorporate that information into their work.
Any developers that are interested in checking the Xperia Tablet Z project out for themselves can hit up Sony's AOSP for Xperia devices page for links to the various GitHubs and binary download links. It's also worth noting that Sony says that it plans to add the Xperia ZL to its project as well.
Sony has been making quite a few noteworthy moves in regards to its Android hardware as of late. The company has started selling several of its unlocked smartphones through its online shop, and lately it's been working hard to show developers some love by adding more of its new Android devices to its AOSP for Xperia project. Actions like those aren't likely to gain Sony a ton of market share, but they do help to grow the company's image, and it's nice to see a manufacturer taking steps to reach out to developers and do things differently in the U.S. wireless industry.
