Sprint outs Jelly Bean for Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE, Multi-View update for Samsung Galaxy S III

Today's turning out to be quite the update-y day! Following the launch of the T-Mobile HTC One S's Jelly Bean update, Sprint has revealed that two of its Android handsets are slated to receive some new software. First up is the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE. This QWERTY-equipped slider is set to finally get its Android 4.1 update, complete with Jelly Bean goodies like Google Now and enhanced notifications. There are also a handful of other improvements included, such as better GSM roaming connectivity. Here's the full changelog for the 9.8.2Q-122_XT897_FFW-5 update:

  • Google OS upgrade to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
    • Google Now
    • Voice search enhancements
    • Camera includes improved image quality and more intuitive panorama mode
    • Ability to zoom out to filmstrip mode in the Gallery
    • Keyboard includes improved dictionary and text to speech capabilities
    • Notification enhancements
  • Resolved Quick Office closing when reviewing a document
  • Improved GSM roaming connectivity for global use
  • Improved streaming of Sprint TV when location services are turned off
  • Enhanced security and ease of use on the face unlock feature
  • Removed Quick Views, Speed Dial, and MOTOPRINT applications
  • Improved accuracy and response of voice to text for texting, emailing, and web search

Sprint has also announced a new update for its flavor of the Samsung Galaxy S III. The update is build number L710VPBMD4, and the big enhancement that's included with it is the Multi-View feature that hit Sprint's version of the Galaxy Note II late last year. Multi-View allows users to choose two apps from a list of supported software and then run those two apps on-screen at the same time. Along with the Multi-View feature, owners of the Sprint Galaxy S III can expect to find the following enhancements inside this new update:

  • Home screen security fix
  • Multi-view: Split Screen multitasking support
  • Camera feature and gallery enhancements
  • Addition of Paper Artist
  • Bulk SMS Enhancements

As far as the rollouts go, Sprint says that the Photon Q 4G LTE's Jelly Bean bump should begin rolling out today, April 25, while the Galaxy S III's update actually started hitting users on April 24. Both updates are likely going to be rolling out in phases, though, so don't fret too much if you don't haven't gotten any new updates on your Photon Q or Galaxy S III lately. If you're rocking either phone and feel the need to check for an update manually, you can do so by heading into the "About phone" section of the device's "Settings" menu.
