When Google acquired Motorola Mobility, many immediately began to hope that the deal would result in some exciting new Android hardware, like a Motorola-made Nexus device. It doesn't look like we'll be seeing any groundbreaking new products from Motorola in the near future, though, as Google CFO Patrick Pichette has revealed at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference that Moto's upcoming products "aren't 'wow' by Google standards." The Verge notes that the statement was in response to a question on what the situation with Motorola is like right now.
Pichette went on to explain that when Google bought Motorola, it also got Moto's pipeline of upcoming products. "Dennis Woodside and his team have inherited 18 months of pipeline that we have to drain right now," the executive said.
While Pichette's (somehat strange) statement doesn't mean that Motorola's upcoming products will be bad, it makes it a little tougher to get super enthusiastic about whatever releases that Moto has planned for the coming months. Rumors have been flying recently about a mysterious "X-Phone" product that Motorola is working on that'll reportedly have a major focus on quality camera and photo software. It's been said that the X-Phone could debut sometime in 2013, but considering Pichette's statement, the device may not actually see the light of day until late 2013 or after. In the mean time, it'll certainly be interesting to watch what kinds of products Motorola launches in the coming months to see exactly what Pichette was describing as not "'wow' by Google standards."
