Apple says some of its employees' computers were hacked, no evidence that data was taken

Hot on the heels of the release of iOS 6.1.2, there's some not-so-good Apple news making the rounds. The Cupertino firm confirmed to AllThingsD and Reuters this afternoon that it was recently targeted by hackers and that a "limited number" of computers belonging to its employees were breached. Apple explains that the exploit used to attack it was a vulnerability with the Java plug-in for browsers and that the malware was spread to it from a developer website.

The good news is that Apple believes that "there is no evidence" that any data actually left its computers. The company is working with law enforcement to track the hackers down, and it's believed that the people behind this attack also recently hacked Facebook.

While Apple says that only a small number of its employees' computers were hacked, it's still never good to hear about attacks on major companies. Thankfully, it sounds like no data was stolen in the hack, so anyone with data being stored by Apple needn't worry about their information being compromised. Apple has said that it plans to release a software tool on Tuesday to help protect consumers against the malware that was used on it. If you've got a Mac computer, that tool is one that you may want to keep an eye out for.
