Nokia: Windows Phone 7.8 update for Lumia devices begins going out today

Today is a big day for Windows Phone, as Nokia has announced that it's begun rolling out the Windows Phone 7.8 update to its Windows Phone 7.5 devices. The update will bring several features found in Windows Phone 8 to Windows Phone 7.5 handsets, such as the ability to resize live tiles, new theme colors, and new lock screen options, like the option of setting the wallpaper to Bing's image of the day as well as better security when it comes to putting a Lumia in a pocket or giving it to a child.

Nokia says that the update will be rolling out to Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800, and 900 units starting today, with the update push expected to continue through February. There's no word on when specific carrier-branded models will be updated, but a recent rumor claimed that AT&T's Lumia 900 may be updated to Windows Phone 7.8 today, so owners of that model may want to keep an eye out for an update notification. The Windows Phone 7.8 update can be installed by plugging a Windows Phone handset into a computer and firing up the Zune software on Windows or the Windows Phone app on Mac.
