Today Nokia held its big Windows Phone event in New York City, and as expected, the company has taken the wraps off of its new flagship Lumia smartphone. Dubbed the Nokia Lumia 920, the device features Nokia PureView camera tech as well as wireless charging capabilities. Nokia also touted the Lumia 920's 4.5-inch 1280x768 PureMotion HD+ display, which is said to feature a fast refresh rate and can work with glove-clad hands. When it comes to powering the Lumia 920, users will find a 2,000mAh battery embedded inside the device, which Nokia says is the largest its ever put in a phone. The Lumia 920 will also be able to refill its battery wirelessly thanks to a wireless puck charger, which is based on the Qi wireless charging standard. Nokia also confirmed that the Lumia 920 features a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor.
One feature of the Lumia 920 that got quite a bit of attention is its camera. The Lumia 920 features an 8.7-megapixel PureView camera that Nokia claims can take the best photo and video of any smartphone around. The camera can capture 5 to 10 times the amount of light of other phones, which helps to produce brighter and clearer images without relying on flash. The Lumia 920's camera also has floating lens tech that Nokia says will help to capture video smoothly. The Lumia 920 also packs a 1.2-megapixel front camera. A new app that utilizes the 920's camera is City Lens, which uses augmented reality to display the names of restaurants and stores on a smartphone's display. Finally, Microsoft's own Joe Belfiore took to the stage to announce that Windows Phone 8 features the ability to capture screenshots and also supports pinch-to-zoom in its camera app.
The body of the Lumia 920 features the same polycarbonate material as the Lumia 800 and 900 before it. Nokia revealed that the device will be available in yellow, as shown above, as well as red, yellow, black and white. The Lumia 920 will be available in pentaband LTE and HSPA+ variants, and Nokia expects to start shipping the device out "in select markets" later in 2012. More launch and pricing details will come closer to the 920's release date.
After numerous leaks and rumors, it's nice to finally have the Lumia 920 officially official. The device looks like a nice evolution of the Lumia 900, and specs like a WXGA display and dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor ought to please folks that are after high-end specs. Of course, the problem is that we don't know exactly when the Lumia 920 will be launching or how much it'll cost when it does. Considering that the Lumia 900 was an AT&T exclusive here in the U.S., it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Lumia 920 also hit the big blue carrier, but we'll have to wait for Nokia's announcement before we know for sure.
