Early last year, Sony took the wraps off of the PlayStation Suite, an initiative that would allow certified Android devices to gain access to PlayStation content. Sony made a couple of big announcements about the Playstation Suite tonight at E3, the first of which being that it's now known as PlayStation Mobile. Along with the rebrand, Sony revealed that it would be teaming up with HTC to create new handsets certified for PlayStation Mobile. There were no announcements about any specific PlayStation Mobile-certified HTC phones or when we might see the first such device come to market. However, Sony did use the One X as an example in its slides when discussing the news of the partnership.
Despite the fact that Sony first announced the PlayStation Suite well over a year ago, the only PlayStation Certified devices that've come to market have been Sony Ericsson/Sony-made devices like the Xperia PLAY and Xperia S. A rumor from back in February suggested that HTC would be one of the first companies outside of Sony to produce PlayStation Mobile-certified hardware, and now it looks like that report was spot on. The same rumor claimed that we could see HTC produce PlayStation Certified devices in the second half of the year. While there's still a lot that we don't know about this HTC-Sony partnership, it's exciting news for Android gamers, especially those that are already fans of HTC's hardware.
