Huawei earlier this year took the wraps off of its entrant into the "World's Thinnest Smartphone" race with the 6.68mm Ascend P1 S, and then Oppo introduced the 6.65mm Finder. Now ZTE has begun teasing its entry into the battle with a device codenamed "Athena." A company executive recently posted about the device on Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo, revealing that the Athena measures in at 6.2mm thick. Packed inside that frame is a Cortex-A15 chip, up to 64GB storage and a 720p display. The Athena is also said to include Android 4.0 beneath ZTE's custom Miflavor overlay.
While the size difference between the Huawei Ascend P1 S and Oppo Finder was just 0.03mm, the ZTE Athena is quite a bit thinner than those two devices. While there's obviously still a lot we don't know about the Athena, including what it's entire outer shell looks like, it's pretty crazy to think that all of the necessary components could fit into a handset that measures 6.2mm thick. And considering how heated the thinness battle seems to be becoming, I doubt it'll be long before another manufacturer tries to best the Athena with an even thinner device.
