Last year HTC announced a tool that would allow the bootloaders on many of its devices to be unlocked, giving users the opportunity to do things like easily load custom ROMs onto their handsets. Unfortunately for folks looking forward to the debut of the HTC One X on AT&T tomorrow, it doesn't look like the 4.7-inch, LTE-enabled handset will be able to take advantage of HTC's bootloader unlock tool. MoDaCo noticed that the tool was unable to unlock the bootloader on the One X, giving an error that read "MID Not Allowed." The site reached out to HTC about the situation and received the following response:
"HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. Since announcing our commitment to unlockable bootloaders, HTC has worked to enable our customers to unlock the bootloader on more than 45 devices over the past six months. In some cases, however, restrictions prevent certain devices from participating in our bootloader unlocking program. Rest assured, HTC is committed to assisting developers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices and we'll continue to unlock additional devices in the future."
The lack of an unlockable bootloader on the AT&T One X isn't likely to be a big deal to many, but this news is definitely a bummer for those that were planning to use HTC's unlocking tool, especially considering how many other HTC devices are able to be unlocked. Although HTC doesn't name what the restrictions are that prevent the One X from being part of the unlocking program, it's possible that AT&T may have had something to do with the decision. It's not yet clear when or if the AT&T One X will be added to the program, but here's to hoping that the restrictions that are being placed on the device are soon lifted.
