As we count down the days until the end of the year, there’s more than a few people out there who are actually counting down to another day entirely. They’re counting down to the day that Apple unveils their brand new hardware in the new iPhone. Before that, though, those same people are counting down the days until Apple unveils their new software in the next version of their mobile platform, iOS. A lot of days to count down, but obviously there’s plenty to look forward to. At least potentially, considering we don’t really know what to expect. But, we can keep guessing, and putting our two cents in when given the opportunity.
This time around, though, I want to take it from a different angle, and ask you a pretty simple question: what do you think Apple is going to budge on?
Because it has to happen, right? While we know that Apple has their own perspective on the way things are going in the mobile market, but I think there has to be some point where we realize that now, in 2012, the mobile market is so saturated with other handsets that people actually want, and that make an impression on the way that mobile phone purchasers think about their next phone, that Apple can’t ignore everyone this time around.
So we’ve got the new iPhone and the next version of iOS coming, and there has to be something that Apple budges on. What I mean, is that Apple has to make some concessions here, and give in to the way that they’ve been doing some things.
First, as we’ve heard plenty of times already, I think this is the iPhone that features a larger display. For two reasons. The first, because I think this is one area that has been completely manipulated by the other phone manufacturers out there, and there’s no denying that people want bigger displays. 4-inches is the smallest people want at this point, and maybe even 4.3-inches. There’s no telling what size Apple will go with, but I feel like this is the time that Apple will make the change.
The second reason is the iPhone 4S and its smaller 3.5-inch display. I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Apple will drop the price on the older device, and I think they’ll market that as a smaller option if you really want it. The new iPhone has a bigger display, but if you want something smaller, we’ve got the 4S for you, with (most, if not all of the) new features being unveiled for the new, larger iPhone.
But, while I think that’s obvious, the more subtle thing I think Apple should budge on is file access. I know that Apple wants to keep their garden walled and what not, and want to make sure that the experience they create is the experience that the customer gets, but I think it’s time that Apple budges on this just a little bit. You don’t need to make it completely open like Android, but maybe just let owners of their phones access the very basic features of their device, on the system file level. It would go a long way to get more iPhones into people’s hands, that’s for sure.
Obviously there are other areas where people think Apple could benefit from “budging” on with the new iPhone, whether it’s hardware or software, and I’m curious to find out what you think Apple should do.
