Sprint is hard at work on rolling out its new LTE network, which it plans to launch by the middle of the year. As a result of the carrier's focus on LTE, Bob Azzi, Sprint's senior vice president of networks, has said that Sprint will not be launching any new WiMAX devices. Sprint has previously said that it will continue to sell WiMAX-capable products through 2012. Azzi also touched a bit on Sprint's LTE progress, saying that Sprint is finishing up final field testing now. Sprint will be launching LTE service on its 1900MHz spectrum, and Azzi said that it'll also be repurposing its 800MHz spectrum that's currently being used for iDEN devices and building out its LTE network with it as iDEN users are moved to Sprint's Direct Connect service.
Considering that Sprint is planning to roll out LTE service by mid-2012 and will be releasing around 15 LTE-capable devices by the end of the year, it makes sense that the carrier would decide to cease launching new WiMAX products. Sprint has yet to say when it'll be releasing its new LTE devices like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper, saying only that availability information will be revealed closer to launch, but a recent rumor claimed that the Galaxy Nexus could be here as soon as the middle of April.
