Purported iPad 3 display put under a microscope, shown to have 2048x1536 resolution

There have been a lot of rumors flying around about the iPad 3 and its purported screen resolution, which many claim will come in at 2048x1536. While we'll likely have to wait until early next month to get the new iPad's official specs from Apple, the folks over at MacRumors decided to take the matter into their own hands and attempt to figure out whether or not the 2048x1536 rumor is legit. The site got hold of an alleged iPad 3 display from an online component supplier, put it under a microscope and compared what they found to the display of an iPad 2. As you can see in the shot above, the supposed 9.7-inch iPad 3 display does appear to have four times the pixels than what's found on the iPad 2.

As with all Apple-related rumors and leaks, nothing's really official until Tim Cook or some other Apple exec utters it on stage. Still, most iPad 3 rumors have agreed that the new tablet's resolution will indeed be pumped up to 2048x1536, and today's bit of news has just added to the high-res display noise. Thankfully we're just a couple of weeks out from when the iPad 3 is expected to make its debut and put an end to the rumors (and probably help kick off iPhone rumor season in the process). Stay tuned!
