AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega has been talking up his carrier's intentions to introduce shared data plans since the middle of last year, but obviously we've yet to see anything actually materialize. Speaking with All Things D, de la Vega promises that the shared data buckets are still in the works, explaining that AT&T is "still working on that” and that the plan is taking extra time to get just right. As for when we can expect such a plan to be made available? The exec shied away from sharing anything close to a concrete date, only saying that they'll be coming to market "soon."
As more and more people pick up smartphones and other devices that require data plans, the demand for shared data plans that are similar to the buckets of minutes that are already offered by the carriers has grown. We've yet to see any carrier offer such a plan, but with de la Vega's statements today and Verizon Communications CEO Lowell McAdam previous claim that we could see shared data on Big Red in 2012, it sounds like the days of folks gathering around and sharing one data bucket may nearly be upon us.
