Google prepping an Android messaging service similar to iMessage, BBM?

Earlier this week, Apple unveiled iOS 5 and iMessage, a BlackBerry Messenger-like service offering free messaging along with read and delivery receipts available to all devices running the latest version of iOS. Now a report from the Wall Street Journal claims that, according to a person familiar with the matter, Google "has also recently worked on a messaging application." Unfortunately, no other details on the rumored messaging service were given.

Obviously Google's already got its own instant messaging client in Google Talk, which makes the news that the company many be working on a messaging app a little strange. Of course, it's possible that Google may just be planning to update GTalk to include BBM/iMessage features like support for photos/videos and delivery receipts, which would seem to make a tad more sense for The Big G compared to it crafting an entirely new service. What do you all make of the possibility of new Google messaging service? Do you think it's more likely that Google would roll out an entirely new product or just update GTalk?
