Shortly after the T-Mobile G2x was announced, one eagle-eyed user was looking over the device's list of specs on T-Mo's site and saw that it sported compatibility with AT&T's 850/1900MHz 3G network, leading many to speculate that the G2x could then be unlocked and be used on ATT 3G. Fast forward to today and T-Mobile has finally officially commented on the matter, and the news is kind of a bummer. T-Mo said that the G2x is actually a dual-band HSPA+ device, not quad-band, meaning that while you'll get 4G while using the device on T-Mobile, if you unlock it and throw in an AT&T SIM, you'll be stuck riding 2G/EDGE airwaves. The full statement from Magenta:
"The T-Mobile G2x fact sheet, attached [PDF link], contains accurate information. The T-Mobile website is incorrect and we're working to correct it. The G2x supports 850/900/1800/1900 MHz for 2G/GPRS only, and supports 3G/4G UMTS/HSPA+ bands I and IV. The G2x does not support AT&T's 3G bands. This banding is hardware based."
So there you have it. Definitely disappointing for anyone that wanted to unlock the G2x for use with AT&T 3G's network, but hey, at least all of you G2x owners out there have an update to Gingerbread to look forward to, am I right?
