The Daily for iPad finally arrives, brings in-app subscriptions to App Store

There have been rumors of iOS subscription-based billing for newspapers and magazines for a while now, and today it was announced that The Daily will be one of the first publications to take advantage of that feature. With pricing set at $0.99 per week or $39.99 per year, The Daily will feature new content every day, including video and audio that will take advantage of the fact that it's running on a tablet, not printed on a dead tree. Launching today, the first two weeks of the "newspaper" will be free courtesy of Verizon. One more quick note: Rupert Murdoch, CEO of News Corp, has said that The Daily could eventually make it to all other tablets, but that "this year and maybe next year belong to Apple."

The Daily certainly isn't the first news app to be released on the iPad, not by a long shot, but it is one of the most important ones in recent memory. It'll be interesting to see how the publication is received with mainstream consumers and how they feel about paying $40 a year for a purely digital newspaper. I'll wait to make a final judgment until I try out The Daily for myself, but $40 for a year of access to news that's updated daily doesn't seem like a bad deal to me. How many of you would be interested in paying $0.99 per week or $39.99 per year for The Daily?
