Microsoft is staying mum on Windows Phone 7 sales numbers, but they've been more than happy to share with us the number of devices that have shipped. Last we heard, Microsoft revealed that 1.5 million WP7 phones were shipped to carriers, and today that number has grown to two million. According to the Redmond-based company, over two million WP7 licenses were sold to manufacturers at the end of the fourth quarter of 2010, although no one is quite sure how many of those devices were actually sold to customers.
Microsoft also gave a small report on the state of Windows Phone 7, claiming that 93 percent of owners are "satisfied" with the OS and that 90 percent would recommend it to their friends. Finally, the Windows Marketplace seems to be experiencing pretty good growth, as MSFT is reporting that there are over 6,500 apps available, with 100 apps being added every day.
While Windows Phone 7 seems to be doing pretty well so far, both in terms of devices shipped and apps available, it kind of worries me that Microsoft still isn't willing to divulge sales numbers. For all we know, a majority of those two million phones could be gathering dust on their carriers' shelves. Still, Microsoft isn't sounding the alarm bell just yet, saying that they're "bullish about the foundation for long-term success." For their sake, and the sake of competition in the mobile industry, I hope they're right.
