Sony Ericsson unveiled the svelte XPERIA Arc at CES last week but, while many of us were excited about the handset, we were even more intrigued by the fact that it said it was running Android 2.4. Today SE has come forward with an explanation, saying that the 2.4 identification was simply a "misconfiguration." The company also gave us more information on the Arc's specs, specifically the processor that'll be running the show. You can expect to see a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 powering up with an Adreno 205 GPU inside the Arc when it arrives. Finally, Sony Ericsson explained that the the device will be getting Android updates in a more "timely manner" thanks to the changes in how they work with Google's OS.
It's kind of disappointing that 2.4 wasn't actually running on that XPERIA Arc being displayed at CES, but I suppose we shouldn't be terribly surprised. After all, it'd be kind of strange to see an early version of 2.4 somehow make its way out of Google's HQ and onto an Arc at CES. The biggest bit of news here has to be that Sony Ericsson is promising quicker updates for the Arc. I've got a feeling that a lot of potential customers got turned off of SE products after the XPERIA X10 took so long to get upgraded to Android 2.1, and the news that it won't move beyond Eclair certainly doesn't help. Here's to hoping that SE sticks to their word. Who knows, perhaps the Arc will be one of the first phones to see Ice Cream when/if it launches later this summer?
