We're still in the early stage of January, meaning that it's time to take another look at the monthly Android OS distribution numbers! This time, the numbers cover the two weeks running up to January 4th, 2011. Thanks to handsets like the original myTouch 3G getting bumped up to Froyo, version 2.2 of Android has finally made it to over half of Android phones on the market. Meanwhile, Android 2.1's share has shrunk to 35.2 percent, and the newcomer Gingerbread has snuck onto a whopping 0.4 percent of Android phones. Android 1.5 and 1.6 are still holding strong even into 2011, with 4.7 and 7.9 percent respectively.
Considering how often Android has been described as "fragmented" in the past, it's pretty awesome to see that versions 2.1 and 2.2 are on nearly 90 percent of all handsets. Here's to hoping that, as Gingerbread becomes more widespread in the next few months and Froyo is pushed to even more phones, we see Cupcake, Donut, and maybe even Eclair eradicated from the charts. Once Samsung manages to roll Froyo out to its Galaxy S line, I have a feeling that this chart is going to look quite a bit different. Come on, Sammy!
