Nokia's N8 is receiving less-than-stellar reviews and AT&T just activated 5.2 million iPhones in Q3, but it turns out that Nokia is still the king of the smartphone hill. The folks at MSNBC are reporting that Nokia smartphones are outselling the iPhone at a rate of just about 2 to 1. During the third quarter, Nokia managed to move 26.5 million smartphones, exceeding analyst expectations. In the same period of time, Apple shipped 14.1 million iPhones.
It's widely known that Nokia is No. 1 when it comes to worldwide numbers, but now that Android and the iPhone are gaining more and more ground in the global scene, it's unclear how long Nokia will remain on top. The company recently announced that their first MeeGo device, rumored to be the N9, will be launching some time in 2011. Will it be enough to bring Nokia back to the forefront of the smartphone race? It's tough to tell right now. With iPhone and Android, as well as newer OSes like webOS 2.0, BlackBerry 6, and Windows Phone 7, all innovating and bringing new features to the table, Nokia needs to bring the heat with MeeGo. The N9's hardware looks great; let's hope the software is just as good.
